Just Got Yourself a DJI Osmo Pocket 3? Read This…
Your no-nonsense crash course from someone who actually uses the thing every day.
If you’ve just unboxed your Pocket 3, you’re probably feeling two things at once:
Excited because it’s tiny and shoots ridiculously good footage.
Overwhelmed because the menus look like DJI hid the good stuff behind a secret handshake.
Good news — once you know the handful of settings that actually matter, the Pocket 3 becomes the easiest camera you’ll ever use. Here’s the quick crash course I wish someone handed me on day one.

1. Start With This: Change These Settings Immediately
Out of the box, DJI sets everything to “safe mode.” It’s fine… but you bought this thing to make your content look better than everyone else’s.
Here’s what to change straight away:
✔️ Colour Mode → D-Log M (or Normal if you hate editing)
Why: D-Log M gives you more dynamic range and flexibility. If you edit even slightly (Premiere, CapCut, whatever), this gives you cleaner highlights and richer colours.
If you don’t want to grade: Keep it on Normal. Zero shame. It still looks great.
✔️ Video Format → 4K 25fps
Why 4K: Sharper footage, better for cropping, looks more “pro” even on socials.
Why 25fps: Matches Aussie power frequency and gives you that natural motion without looking like a soap opera.
✔️ Shutter Speed → Set to Auto (for now)
If you’re new, auto will keep your exposure under control.
If you're keen later: follow the 180-degree rule → shutter = double your FPS (so 1/50 for 25fps).
✔️ Stabilisation → HorizonSteady (for walking/talking)
Smooth, clean, and perfect for POV or vlog-style shots.
Switch to RockSteady if you're running, biking, or swinging a driver.
✔️ Anti-Flicker → 50Hz
We’re in Australia.
This prevents lighting flicker indoors.
2. Bitrate & Quality: What You Actually Need
The Pocket 3 shoots up to 130Mbps, but don’t stress — you don’t need the absolute max for social content.
Recommended: High Bitrate
You’ll get cleaner detail, especially in grass, sky, and water (massive win for golf creators).
Not Essential: HLG
It’s nice, but D-Log M gives you more consistency across different cameras if you mix footage.
3. The Three Modes Every Beginner Should Use
🎥 PRO VIDEO MODE
Use this when you're shooting content intentionally — B-roll, walking pieces, course fly-bys, products, etc.
Unlocks full manual controls
Lets you pick your colour profile
Gives your video that “you actually know what you’re doing” look
🏃♂️ QUICKSHOT / FPV MODE
Great for fun movement shots.
FPV: Camera tilts with your motion
QuickShot: Automated cinematic moves
Perfect for intros, transitions, or showing off a location.
🎤 FACE TRACKING (ActiveTrack 6.0)
If you vlog, turn this on.
It sticks to your face like you're the main character (which, let’s be honest… you are).
4. Audio Settings That Make a Huge Difference
The Pocket 3 has surprisingly good audio — but only if you tweak it.
✔️ Mic Mode → Stereo
More natural sound
Picks up ambience without sounding thin
✔️ Volume → Auto is fine
If you talk loud, drop it to -3dB so you don’t clip.
Upgrade Later:
Add a wireless mic if you want crystal-clean voice.
5. When to Shoot 4K vs. 1080p
4K: Vlogs, talking pieces, reels, anything important
1080p: Low-light situations, long recordings (saves space), behind-the-scenes footage
4K on the Pocket 3 looks insane for its size — take advantage of it.
6. The BEST Settings for Social Media (Trust Me)
If you create Reels, Shorts, or TikToks — these settings are your sweet spot:
Vertical Mode: ON
The Pocket 3 rotates automatically — use it. Don’t crop later.
Resolution: 4K
You’ll stand out against everyone shooting on old phones.
FPS: 25fps
Clean movement, less jitter.
Colour: Normal or D-Log M
If you want to punch them up in editing, go D-Log. If not, Normal looks brilliant.
Stabilisation: Horizon Steady
Perfect for walking from tee to tee, talking to camera, or showing off a fairway.
7. One Setting You MUST Change for Golf Footage
If you're filming someone swinging:
✔️ Set FPS → 50fps
Slows the swing down nicely
Keeps motion smooth
Makes the Pocket 3 look like a mini high-frame-rate camera
You can then slow it to 50% in editing with no choppiness.
8. The Button Shortcuts You’ll Use Daily
Double-Tap the Screen: Re-centre the camera.
Triple-Tap the Power Button: Flip to selfie mode instantly.
Hold the Gimbal Button: Switch stabilisation modes fast.
Once these are muscle memory, you’ll never miss a moment again.
9. The Most Underrated Setting: Pro Mode → Sharpness -1
The Pocket 3 is a bit “crispy” out of the box.
Drop sharpness to -1 and your footage immediately looks more cinematic and less phone-like.
10. Final Tip: Don’t Overthink It
The Pocket 3 is designed to get you filming right away.Start with these settings, shoot as much as you can, and tweak as you go. You’ll naturally figure out what works for your style — whether that’s cinematic B-roll, raw “talking to camera” pieces, on-course golf storytelling, or daily vlogs.
